Senators, Please Extend the Federal Transportation Enhancements Program

Yesterday, I received an email from the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin regarding an upcoming U.S. Senate vote to extend (or cut) funding for, among other things, the Transportation Enhancements program.  This program funds infrastructure for bicycle and pedestrian traffic.

Here in Madison, Wisconsin, we have fantastic bike trails and routes.  Our Mayor Soglin has remained steadfast in keeping bicycling a priority for the capitol city.  He notes on his blog that spending on bicycle projects, "dollar for dollar produce more jobs and higher economic returns on investment than traditional road projects."  This point is echoed by activists.

I don't usually pay much attention to the political system, but biking has become a way of life for me recently.  (I still have my car for occasional travels outside of the city.)  I contacted the offices of Wisconsin Senators Kohl and Johnson.  I stressed that bicycling has made marked improvements on my physical and mental health; that my decision to bike has led to many other good decisions; and that citizens making good decisions lead to a safe and thriving place to live and work.
